Framptons Given Go Ahead for New Building

Having outgrown our original premises, Framptons has received planning permission to build an additional factory on land at Charlton Road, Shepton Mallet, which will provide further manufacturing space and create at least 30 new jobs. The original factory building will remain, and Framptons will continue to occupy Units 1 and 2 on the Crowne Trading Estate.

Framptons’ existing buildings have reached full capacity, but demand from its major contract packing customer requires the addition of further bottling lines, which are planned to be installed in the proposed building.

In 2008, Framptons purchased the former GA Williams garage site adjacent to their factory. Occupying the site currently is a fuel station, shop and vehicle rental premises.  The proposal is to remove these facilities and build a new factory.  The new facility will include a bottling hall, which will house up to four filling lines, a purpose built office area, staff canteen, distribution warehouse with HGV access, a reception area and parking for employees and visitors, including cyclists.

Clive Frampton, Chairman of Framptons Limited, said: “It is important to us that our operations remain on a single site in Shepton Mallet. We have been based in Shepton since the 1960s, and it is important to us that we remain here and continue to support our local community.

“As our company expands, we require extra space in order to meet customer demand. The proposed building has been designed in order to maximise our manufacturing potential, whilst ensuring it fits with the landscaping of the surrounding area and is environmentally sustainable.”

Due to the nature of the development and the possible effect on any neighbouring properties, a number of factors were considered prior to application submission.  These include the effect on local community, noise pollutants and dealing with any contaminants existing on the site.

The size of the proposed building has been designed to provide the necessary space to meet the needs of Framptons Ltd, as well as respecting neighbouring properties.  Care has been taken to embed the building into its landscape, in order to enhance the aesthetic from the street and calm noise. Plans include extensive landscaping, and the planting of a number of trees on the boundary to the site.

Framptons Ltd is committed to protecting the environment and has been proactive in reducing its energy use and water consumption. In 2011, Framptons reached its target of sending zero production waste to landfill.  The new building will incorporate rainwater harvesting and photovoltaic panels on the roof, allowing the company to further improve its environmental credentials.

Framptons has garnered praise for its operations and approach to sustainability, which in the past two years has been recognised with ten industry-based awards, including a prestigious National Business Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in 2009 and a European Business Award and Family Business of the Year at the Somerset Business Awards in 2011.

The development will secure its position within Shepton Mallet as an award winning company for the foreseeable future.
